Summer At Spring Lake

Making the Most of August

August in Memphis is hot, humid, and accompanied by more than a few mosquitoes here at Spring Lake. With temperatures in the 90s and extreme heat still in the forecast, this is not the time of year for spending long afternoons outdoors; but there are still some simple ways to enjoy the last weeks of summer in the neighborhood.

Early mornings

Walking before it gets too hot can be a good way to enjoy the lake, birds, trees, and quieter streets. One fun addition to a morning neighborhood walk is Merlin Bird ID, a free app from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Its Sound ID feature can listen to the birds calling nearby and help identify them even when you can’t see them in the trees. It can turn an ordinary morning walk into a bit of a scavenger hunt to see how many different species are around the lake.

Evenings

Sunsets, taking photos, sitting outside once the sun drops, maybe a slow stroll around the neighborhood.

Look out for Neighbors

During periods of extreme heat, it’s also a good time to look out for one another. A quick call or visit to check on a neighbor, particularly one who lives alone or may have difficulty getting out in the heat, is a small gesture that can make a big difference.

Stay Cool & Plan Ahead

If you do spend time outdoors, plan activities for the cooler morning or evening hours, stay hydrated, and don’t forget the mosquito repellent!

Before long, cooler mornings and the first signs of fall will arrive. Until then, enjoy the lake when you can, take in a sunset or two, and make the most of these last weeks of summer at Spring Lake.
